Though there have been many theories on dreams, the two most commonly known theories are those by Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung.
Freud believed that there was a psychological technique that made it possible to interpret
dreams. His book, "The Interpretation of Dreams" changed the way we looked at ourselves, even
though it only sold 351 copies during it's first six years in publication. Freud believed that
all living phenomena are determined by the laws of cause and effect and that dreams followed these
same laws. He also believed that dreams played an important role in providing information to
material hidden in the subconcious mind.
Before meeting Freud in 1907, Carl Gustav Jung was already developing his own theories on dreams.
Essentially, in the beginning, Jung was in agreement with Freud. However, after researching
some of his patients, Jung noticed a pattern developing among dreams that did not coincide with
the beliefs of Freud. It was then that they went their separate ways. Jung found that there
were common dream symbols that ran across different cultures throughout centuries of time. These
dream symbols remained the same for everyone regardless of backgrounds.
Here at Dreaming Minds we hold part of Freud's and part of Jung's theories
to our own. We believe that while dream symbols are the same among everyone, there are still parts
of dreams that remain distinctively your own and that no two dreams are exactly alike or can be
interpreted in the same way. We believe that dreams are as individual as people are. Our theory is that dreams can be very symbolic in nature to what has happened in our normal waking life, and yet there are times when a supernatural influence enters this unconscious realm and it's important that we heed the message that it gives us.
